Are You my Friend’ You Ask

Whilst there may be times, for all of us,
when we retreat into ourselves
and say we have no need of others.
And whilst at times, someone else
may fill the gap ... I have to say…

If hearing the sound of your voice brings me joy,
means I am your friend...

If knowing I will miss you deeply
while you are away,
means I am your friend...

If my eyes fill with tears
when no-one else can fill the space
that you so uniquely do -
means I am your friend...

If knowing that one day I might
stand beside your grave,
with an ache that no-one can fill -
means I am your friend...

If I feel alone and afraid of being without you
and yet walk on through life
and smile and give to others,
then even if we are hundreds of miles apart
or if death separates us -
I am your friend.

Friends are Like Books

By many means acquired
Some you let go of
and never see again –
some gladly, some sadly.

Some return after absence.
Some you will keep, but neglect.

Others you'll glance at …
some you'll reach out for in need.

Some you will keep by your side.
Others you will share
and a few, you will jealously guard.

But some, perhaps one or two, will be special.
You will know what they mean off by heart.
You will hold them and turn them
and love them and learn them.
They'll get quite worn through much use.

Yet these of your books, like your friends,
are the ones
you will value the most!

I Wish for You

Life brings many experiences,
some good,
some bad,
some in-between.

You have been my friend
for many years
and I hope that will continue.

We have seen life, we two,
we have shared so deeply,
it blows my mind sometimes.

I wish for you –
not happiness for that can fade
nor riches for they can turn to rags
nor a life of ease
which may make you fat!

I wish for you strength in God,
patience to see you through the trials.
Joy that goes deeper
than anything the world
can throw at you.

I wish for you the best !

For one of my dearest friends

Shared Solitude

Sitting side by side.
Lost in thoughts
of our own.
Beautiful.

Looking at sky, lake, boathouse;
budding rose bushes,
trees, grass, all so green.

Just a foot apart,
but miles away.
In contented,
shared solitude.

Under the Same Sky

The moment when the sun rises,
lifting, separating, gently diffusing
light across the land,
buildings becoming clearer,
distant islands rise.

On days when a blanket of grey drapes a murky world,
eyes of faith can see above,
for travels past have proved
there is blue - and clouds of cotton wool!

When thunder and lightning crash across the sky,
exciting your eyes, ears, reflexes,
bursting through your being,
stirring your soul,
cloudbursts flooding earth with moisture,
clearly - you will hear!

Whenever you see the sun falling asleep,
bursting waves of bronze, silver, gold across the sky,
changing moment by moment, as it falls,
clouds draping, wafting, moving,
darkness falling...
into silence - you will understand!

And one night, when into dark blackness
shine the stars,
reassuring, reminding, comforting, pointing the way
to new days, new walks, new ways -
to dawn of truth!
You will know we share the same sky!
